Academy coaches

We are privileged to have secured the support of experienced, talented coaches from within the region who have extensive experience competing at a range of distances both at the national and Olympic level.

Tony O'Hagan

Tony O’Hagan is the lead coach for the Academy.  Tony has more than 20 years experience of coaching Junior and age group athletes for sprint, Olympic and ironman distances. He is the current coach to the Baradene School Triathlon and Distance Running groups. He is a current Level 2 accredited TriNZ coach. 

Nathan Richmond

Having been a highly successful triathlete competing at Olympic and World Cup level, Nathan understands the dedication, determination and discipline required to make it to the top in sport. He is passionate about people and their ability to achieve no matter what their ability level. A former Director of SwimTastic, he was the recipient of NZ Swim Coaches and Teachers Association “NZ Swim Teacher of the Year” in 2016 As well as his swimming coaching, Nathan has been involved in Triathlon Coaching since 2009.

Nathan’s goal is to build on the fantastic opportunity of Auckland City Triathlon Cub’s vision to create a fun and successful Junior Program within Triathlon, ultimately opening up the gateway for our next generation to succeed. Sam Gardner

Sam Gardner was originally from the UK. He started his sporting career as a cyclist, and over the years has picked up 5 national medals in this discipline.  He has competed in Xterra triathlons as pro, and competed in 70.3 and ironman.

Sam has a Sport and Exercise Science degree and has coached athletes for 20 years. He is the current Head Triathlon coach at St Kentigern College. He has competed additional coaching courses with British Triathlon and is first aid trained
