Congratulations Tony Sangster_Orakei Awardsto club member and TO for well deserved recognition in the Auckland Orakei local ward Volunteer recognition awards at a special ceremony on the 23 June… Congratulations Tony Sangster from the club and the NZ triathlon community… We couldn’t do it without you!

The well deserved award came after nomination from the team at Auckland City Tri Club and supported by Tri NZ… The team are really excited to be able to showcase the world a little of what Tony has done for our community and our sport…

On behalf of Auckland City Tri Club and our community, we would like to nominate the tireless Tony Sangster for a Recognition Award.

Tony has been involved in triathlon since any of us can remember (so well over 12 years) and through most of that time has put his own personal athletic endeavours aside to enable the rest of us to compete.  Tony’s main contribution is as a volunteer technical official, the team of volunteers that ensure that we all race safely and fairly.  In the last twelve months we are aware that Tony has taT Sangster briefingken weeks of unpaid leave from his full time job plus over 14 weekends, to look after events throughout the country…but most particularly in Auckland and our area.  Regardless of whether he is volunteering for the New Zealand Schools, Auckland Schools or general public events, he is always there with a big smile,T Sangster on bikeand encouraging word and a strong sense of fair play (and no matter the conditions…rain, hail or shine.)  Often spending hours and hours of pre event preparation, followed by the work on the day, just to ensure that we as Aucklanders and thousands more kiwis have the opportunity to get off the couch and get to play in our amazing backyard.

Technical officials are all voluntary and have to foot the costs of their travel and accommodation so it’s a big commitment to the sport.  Events range from secondary schools and right through to the very long day that is Ironman.

On top of his technical official duties, Tony is often one of the first to raise his had to help out with club activities, whether is carting gear and helping with our events.

As a new Grandad and Dad to two daughters (and with a very supportive wife), we are always amazed out how much Tony gives to our sport and our community!

On behalf of the hundreds of members of Auckland City Triathlon Club, the thousands of Aucklanders (and most from our ward) that have benefitted from Tony’s dedication – we truly believe he deserves this award…

The last week of the July School holidays saw a number of our juniors get together for an inaugural holiday junior training camp as the first steps for a wider regional programme.  Club coach Tony O’Hagan, with the support of Carolyn Smith (running specialist) and Jana Wilkitzki (swimming) lead a four day training block.  Some solid training with a strong focusing on technique to make the most of focused training opportunity. Great attitude and commitment show by all who attended.

Following the programme we are running information and discussion evening with parents to work through how we can best support our juniors to achieve what they want to achieve.

If you are keen to get involved in the future please email juniors@aucklandcitytri.co.nz

New Zealand’s emerging triathletes enjoyed another largely successful weekend with a podium for Elise Salt (Auckland CIty Tri Club) leading the way at the Geneva European Junior Cup race overnight NZT.  A member of the Tri NZ Development Squad, Salt was third in the Junior Women’s race

“For Elise it was a fantastic result, and is a reflection of her attention to detail in training, and over the past 10 days of travelling and racing.

Salt was delighted with her days work.

“It was a pretty tough race due to the one kilometre hill on each of the three laps of the bike, which ended up working in my favour. After a slip up at the start of the swim I came out of the water with a bunch of others about 30 seconds back from the leading bunch of 10. I really suffered in the swim, got swum over several times but I swam strongly in the second half to work my way up the field.

“On the bike we kept a pretty constant gap to the lead pack until the third lap where a Swiss girl and I bridged up. I was quite apprehensive about the hard bike course before racing but I felt strong up the hill which is where we made up a lot of time. As for the run, the field got pretty spread out. Sophie Coldwell – the eventual winner, went out fast and held that the whole run. It was a hard run after a hard bike but I am super happy to have placed third.”

For such young and inexperienced athletes as this group, there are as many if not more learnings away from racing at this stage of their careers, something Salt commented on.

“It has been a pretty full on week with a lot of travelling, to be honest I didn’t know how my body would hold up and how well I would recover after racing Osaka a week ago then travelling to Spain and Switzerland. I made sure I did all I could to make sure I was ready for racing, including an ice bath after Osaka, adjusting to the European time zone straight away and early nights but still I picked up a cold a couple of days ago which wasn’t ideal.”

Salt mapped out her plan from here to the Edmonton World Champs.

“I definitely have a few things to work on if I want to perform well at World Champs in August. Swim speed is critical for the beginning of a race and I need to be running about a minute faster if I want to contend for a medal. So, back to Spain for a couple of weeks of specific training, then a race in Hungary before heading over to Edmonton for World Champs which is what I am aiming towards.”

(Thanks to Tri NZ for story)

A fantastic set of results today at Ironman Cairns by Auckland City Tri Club members.  First up and first home Cameron Brown…proving that he is getting wider and wilier with age.  Just shy of his 42nd birthday he stormed home on the run to take out the race over Tim Van Berkel in what looked like very tropical and wet conditions!  Following him up was up and coming pro Melanie Burke with a smashing bike time of 5hours…to take out second pro women.  A couple of commendable results from team members Veiko Termonen smashing his PB after racing Taupo earlier this year and Rob Dallimore belting out the 70.3 despite purportedly having to run an extra 5kms with his bike due to a flat and no spare….

Awesome job team ACT!

Our club is turning 25 this year…and as one of the founding clubs in the country we are looking for stories and memorabilia to help capture this moment of history…if you can help out…contact us!  In the meantime, sign up for our special event on the 9th August…lots of trivia and prizes on offer!

Club member – Melanie Burke celebrated her first ever Ironman podium this weekend with a great performance to secure 3rd place at Port Macquarie.  Coming from a rowing and cycling background, Mel has been working on her swimming as she transitions from world class duathlete to world class long distance triathlete!    Congratulations Mel from the ACT team…the result reflects what can be achieved with some great hard work!
