Congratulations to club member and TO for well deserved recognition in the Auckland Orakei local ward Volunteer recognition awards at a special ceremony on the 23 June… Congratulations Tony Sangster from the club and the NZ triathlon community… We couldn’t do it without you!
The well deserved award came after nomination from the team at Auckland City Tri Club and supported by Tri NZ… The team are really excited to be able to showcase the world a little of what Tony has done for our community and our sport…
On behalf of Auckland City Tri Club and our community, we would like to nominate the tireless Tony Sangster for a Recognition Award.
Tony has been involved in triathlon since any of us can remember (so well over 12 years) and through most of that time has put his own personal athletic endeavours aside to enable the rest of us to compete. Tony’s main contribution is as a volunteer technical official, the team of volunteers that ensure that we all race safely and fairly. In the last twelve months we are aware that Tony has taken weeks of unpaid leave from his full time job plus over 14 weekends, to look after events throughout the country…but most particularly in Auckland and our area. Regardless of whether he is volunteering for the New Zealand Schools, Auckland Schools or general public events, he is always there with a big smile, and encouraging word and a strong sense of fair play (and no matter the conditions…rain, hail or shine.) Often spending hours and hours of pre event preparation, followed by the work on the day, just to ensure that we as Aucklanders and thousands more kiwis have the opportunity to get off the couch and get to play in our amazing backyard.
Technical officials are all voluntary and have to foot the costs of their travel and accommodation so it’s a big commitment to the sport. Events range from secondary schools and right through to the very long day that is Ironman.
On top of his technical official duties, Tony is often one of the first to raise his had to help out with club activities, whether is carting gear and helping with our events.
As a new Grandad and Dad to two daughters (and with a very supportive wife), we are always amazed out how much Tony gives to our sport and our community!
On behalf of the hundreds of members of Auckland City Triathlon Club, the thousands of Aucklanders (and most from our ward) that have benefitted from Tony’s dedication – we truly believe he deserves this award…
